Shakina’s Story of Hope Belonging to a traditional family in India, Shakina was bound to restrictions that strictly prohibited women from working after they were married. These restrictions resulted in Shakina’s family being forced to live in extreme poverty. Shakina realized she had no alternative but to work and help support her family. Shakina wants her two daughters to have a better future. She works hard to be able to send them to school. One daughter now hopes to become a doctor! Shakina believes her work as an Artisan is setting an example for her local community where women working is still not culturally accepted. She believes that women being able to work is the key to children in India having hope for a better future.
