Afsana’s Story of Hope Afsana lives in an area of extreme poverty in India where many women who live in traditional rural villages continue to endure extreme gender discrimination and exploitation. They are often expected to remain behind closed doors and never work outside the home. Even if they are allowed to work outside the home, vulnerable women are often exploited by sweatshops, which are unsafe factories with unsafe working conditions, unreasonable hours, and unfair wages. Many sweatshops also pay females significantly less than males for doing the same work. Afsana can safely earn an equal and fair living wage in this fair-trade workshop in India that treats marginalized women with dignity and respect. They are committed to training and empowering local women like Afsana to become Artisans, to discover their full potential, and to pursue their dreams.
