How Whimsical Holiday Ornaments Are Empowering Women in Nepal

How Whimsical Holiday Ornaments Are Empowering Women in Nepal

(Read Time: 1 min.)

Women in Nepal are using traditional Artisan techniques that have been passed down for generations to create whimsical holiday ornaments that empower them to overcome centuries of gender discrimination and lead their families out of poverty.

Sujata’s Story of Hope in Nepal

“In my village in Nepal, there is a practice of early marriage for girls. But thankfully, my parents allowed me to study in school. After I passed my twelfth year of school, I wished to study further and earn income on my own to support my family. But due to my economic condition, I could not continue my studies.”

“So, I came here with my relative who works in this Artisan community. With her support, I learned the skills of felting and matting and became an Artisan in this workshop, too!”

Our Traditional Art of Felting

Festive Finch Ornament Duo Artisans in Nepal begin with fresh clean wool

First, the dyed wool is matted into shapes with the help of paper patterns.

Then, the main body part of the bird is developed.

Once the bodies are ready, the wire legs are created.

Next, the hats and other accessories are hand stitched to attach to each bird.

Finally, we add needle felting and hand-stitched designs.

 How Felting Empowers Me

“I’m confident enough to do handcrafting and I’ve developed my networking, communication, and learning skills. I would like to become an expert in the craft of felting.”

“I’m happy that I’m earning on my own, learning skills, living independently, and supporting myself and my family. I am living my dreams by supporting the education of my brother and sister. I would like to see them rise and study higher levels in school.”

How You Can Change Lives in Nepal

“My favorite part of my workday is being busy and learning new techniques! My favorite memories as an Artisan are participating in skill improvement training and then watching our handmade goods making people happy!” – Sujata
